Program Notes:

This work was commissioned in 2017 by Art of Elan and specially written for NOW Ensemble. When the idea of writing a quintet came to my mind I started thinking about the number five, the five elements, and I wanted to write something about magic. The the idea of a powerful, majestic witch using her pendulum to connect with Earth’s energies and speaking with nature and night spirits inspired me to create this work. I think music should be powerful enough to speak for itself and inspire the performers and the audience so I’ll let the rest of the story be created and imagined by them, wishing only that the individual magic of the fiver players can become the points of the pentagram with one mystical voice.

NOW Ensemble performing Bruja at San Diego Musuem of Art on May 15, 2018.
