Lei Liang

Petal by Petal, Leaf by Leaf

ensemble flute, viola, harp

duration  11 minutes

written 2016

commissioned by Art of Elan for the Myriad Trio

premiered January 30, 2017, San Diego, CA

Program Notes:

I have always been fascinated with the sound of natural images. What does a falling flower petal

sound like, if we can hear it? Would a tree become a symphony of sounds, if we can imagine

what’s hidden underneath its silence?

Song Recollections

ensemble string quartet

duration  22 minutes

written 2016

commissioned by Art of Elan for the Formosa Quartet

premiered March 29, 2016, San Diego, CA

Program Notes:

Song Recollections is based on the beautiful folk music of Taiwanese aboriginal tribes, which I fell in love with many years ago. My good friends from Taiwan introduced these songs to me when I was a college student. I was, and still am, amazed by this magical music! My quartet treats each song as a musical ‘landscape’ through which one can ‘travel’. To compose a work is very much like curating a journey for a listener to traverse through the song’s inner terrain and sonic landscape.
