Art of Elan’s popular downtown series returned with an evening of genre-defying music that features the ever-innovative Jesus Gonzalez in collaboration with Griffin Powdrell (flute) and Art of Elan musicians Batya MacAdam-Somer (violin/viola), Alex Greenbaum (cello), and Julie Smith Phillips (harp). The program, arranged and transcribed by the multi-instrumentalist and composer Jesse Audelo, included the world premiere of songs from Jesus’s upcoming album, “ENOCH,” as well as some favorites from his past work. This unique concert will be held at Union Hall Gallery in Golden Hill.
Jesus Gonzalez is a visionary local San Diego musician who draws inspiration from nature, poetry and the overall experience of being alive. Jesus creates original and improvised songs that invite you to be present with your heart and the magic of the moment we’re all living in. In a recent interview with NPR’s top shelf artists series, Jesus said “At the core of it all I think my music is simply shouting ‘Can you believe we’re all here?!’”. Using a looper, Jesus creates layers of soulful vocal harmonies, different instrumentation, and percussion to create vast lush sounds that are sure to help you fall deeper into your sense of self.
The work of seven incredibly talented and notable artists, who are the first-ever Visiting Artist Fellows of the Ilan-Lael Foundation, is on display at Union Hall Gallery as part of the exhibit The Power of Place: Inspirations from Ilan-Lael. This new program invites artists to create and work at Ilan-Lael, the residence of renowned artist James Hubbell, who lived and created there for over 50 years. Visiting Artist Fellows were selected by the Ilan-Lael Foundation as they each embody James Hubbell’s values of nature appreciation, sincerity, and art’s impact on our world. This exhibition showcases the results of their creative endeavors during the spring and summer of 2024, featuring paintings, photographs, and poetry presented in broadside format.
This concert is currently SOLD OUT.
