Program Notes:
This 9-minute multi-media performance video takes its inspiration from the thoughtful works of photographic art previously on display in Masters of Photography: The Garner Collection at The San Diego Museum of Art, which features iconic images by some of the most famous photographers from the 20th century to the present. As a direct tie-in to the exhibit's "Manipulating Reality" theme, Art of Elan takes a closer look at the power of transformation, featuring "Jabberwocky" by Mexican composer Andrea González, an incredibly compelling piece of music for solo clarinet and multimedia: This colorful and fantastical online program, featuring internationally acclaimed clarinetist Joshua Rubin, was the world premiere performance of González's work, which was inspired by the Lewis Carroll poem and created for Art of Elan as a companion piece for this special Virtual SDMA+ concert.
“This work has been really interesting to make because it is the first time I made this kind of project where I can include video, an instrument and electronics. 'Jabberwocky' is a nonsense poem that leaves an open interpretation about what's happening so that was what I wanted to tell in this piece.”
