Video Premiere/Art of Elan Commission
This 15-minute multi-media performance video takes its inspiration from the thoughtful works of Masters of Photography: The Garner Collection at The San Diego Museum of Art, which featured iconic images by some of the most famous photographers from the 20th century to the present. As a direct tie-in to the exhibit's "Manipulating Reality" theme, Art of Elan takes a closer look at the power of transformation, featuring two incredibly compelling pieces of music for solo clarinet and multimedia: “Advice from a Caterpillar" for bass clarinet from the opera "Alice in Wonderland" by South Korean composer Unsuk Chin, and "Jabberwocky" by Mexican composer Andrea González. This colorful and fantastical online program, featuring internationally acclaimed clarinetist Joshua Rubin, was the world premiere performance of González's work, which was inspired by the Lewis Carroll poem and was created for Art of Elan as a companion piece for this special Virtual SDMA+ concert.
“This work has been really interesting to make because it is the first time I made this kind of project where I can include video, an instrument and electronics. 'Jabberwocky' is a nonsense poem that leaves an open interpretation about what's happening so that was what I wanted to tell in this piece.”
-Andrea Gonzalez, a resident of Querétaro, México
