Art of Elan’s 14th season at SDMA opened with “Reflections,” a thought-provoking cinematic program that explored the bizarre and complex world of twins and multiples as viewed through the lens of photographer and documentarian Mary Ellen Mark. In a concert-length (1 hour) film, Art of Elan transformed the Museum into a creative playground, activating different galleries with music, dancers, and a variety of unique reflections. Featured artists included Kate Hatmaker on violin, marimba virtuosos James Beauton, Fiona Digney and Andrew Watkins, and dancers from Disco Riot.
"The Mary Ellen Mark: Twins exhibition allows us to consider the wide range of people in the world, and that despite appearances no two people, or types of people, are ever exactly the same," shares Cory Woodall, Assistant Curator at The San Diego Museum of Art. "The interviews also show the wide range of experiences and outlooks individuals have. When we take the time to truly consider each other, we find that we cannot always trust our assumptions and that it is rewarding to take a closer look at the variety of people in our society."
